(More customer reviews)Rane has discontinued this model and updated it to the HC 6S. I have the HC 4S (for 4 headphones), which amazon doesn't list. I'm using the HC 4S with the computer setup I mention as current in my review of the Griffin FireWave (Mac G4, Philips32 ohm headphones), and a Hosa CMP-153 - Audio cable. (Monster Cable makes the Stereo 1/8 Inch Mini to Dual 1/4 Inch - also in a shorter version - which would also work.)
I didn't expect much of a difference, and bought the amp because I wanted more volume (loudness) and because I intend to replace the Philips headphones with 80 ohm Beyer-Dynamics. The amp provides not only greater volume of loudness but a richer volume of tone. It expands the sound, and the sound remains clear. This is comparing the headphones plugged directly into the FireWave versus having the amp between the FireWave and the headphones.
I was surprised to find that a classical music CD sounds better through the Rane amp connected to the computer than through the living room stereo system and the headphone jack of the receiver. The "resolution" of the sound through the RaneHC 4S remains clear, rich, and articulated, no matter the loudness, whereas through the Sony receiver (using the same headphones)it sounds full but muddy and bloated, even at low loudness volumes.
Think of the resolution of a digital movie or photo, of how the picture gets fuzzy at higher magnifications. Even though the picture is large (it fills up more volume) it isn't articulated. The Sony lacks articulation even at low volumes, even though it sounds "full".
Note: The HC 6S has features not found in the HC 4S.

Product Description:
The Rane HC 6 is one of the most indispensable products in today's audio industry. Featuring six stereo headphone amplifiers, the HC 6 performs a number of necessary tasks, not all of which are headphone related. The HC 6 provides Master stereo 1/4" TRS Inputs which can drive any or all of the 6 stereo headphone amplifiers. A Mono switch is provided on the front panel to drive both channels of all six amplifiers from a common mono source. Six individual unbalanced stereo Inputs are available to drive any individual amplifier from a separate stereo source. These Inputs can be converted to mono balanced Inputs through internal jumpers if required.Outputs for all six channels are provided on the front panel and on the rear panel so that headphones may be connected on either side based on the requirements of a given installation. Two pairs of headphones may be driven from each channel, one pair connected to the front and one to the rear. The HC 6 is capable of delivering up to 450 milliwatts per channel into headphones with rated impedances between 32-600 ohms. The precise amount of power depends on the exact impedance of the headphone in use and the number of headphones connected to the unit. Under most conditions, the HC 6 produces sound pressure levels in excess of 120 dB. This level is above the threshold of pain and is suitable for most listeners.
