(More customer reviews)The Ultrasone headphone appears to be made of a very high quality plastic.This is pretty common among headphones made in Germany.My AKG 601 and 701 are made of plastic.I believe that the Beyerdynamic 990, 880, and 770 also have large amounts of plastic in the construction.The Sennheiser 600 and 650 also appear to be made of plastic too.All of these headphones originate from Germany or Austria.They may not look as "expensive" without more metal parts, but if you look on the inside of most loudspeakers, you will see that they are also constructed of some inert, dense kind of plastic or resin.It seems to be less likely to cause unwanted vibrations that effect the quality of sound.

The packaging on the new models comes with a hardshell case that allows plenty of room for the headphones and two sets of detachable cords--one is straight and the other is like a pig-tail.They screw into the headphone.If you are going to use an adapter to change the plug from 1/4" to 1/8" for an Ipod or portable headphone amplifier (always recommended), I suggest the Grado adapter because it has a longer wire that allows the leverage pressure to be off the Ipod jack or headphone jack.The headphones come with an adaptor, but it is the straight kind that puts a kind of pressure on the jack.The headphones also come with another set of earpads.

The sound is really great.The sound is very forward.You get a good sound stage with a real sense of separation of instruments and/or vocals.It sounds like the instruments are placed in different locations (which they are of course).I especially like the sound of live performance recordings.The bass is sometimes so strong that it can be overpowering.However, I have heard a pair that has been broken in.The bass is still very strong, but not overpowering.The first pair of the Pro 900's were straight out of the box with no breakin.I am not sure that I would call these headphones "nuetral."If you want nuetral, check out the Sennheiser 600 or 650 or a number of the Audio-Technica (open backed headphones) earphones which present a very balanced sound.These headphones make a statement--like the so wonderful Grado headphones.

These are really lively and fun, but the bass can be heavy. However, on repeated hearing--especially in jazz, I like the firm, strong bass.In modern jazz (bebop and later), the time is kept on the bass.The bass is critical.

I find myself returning to these headphones frequently.By the way, I also really like the Ultrasone 2500 which has a more balanced presentation, but not quite as exciting as the 900's.I believe that open ended headphones usually do make for a more open, airy, less bassy sound.

All in all, I have to say that I really enjoy listening to them.

M-Audio Studiophile Q40 Closed-back Dynamic Headphones Review

(More customer reviews)I decided to take the plunge and take a chance on this relatively new brand and purchase my first real set of headphones (had an akg k26 p before). Got it on Monday and I've been very pleased with it thus far. Bass is right there and should be comparable to many sub $150 headphones (except the DT770s) judging from other user reviews at head-fi.org. I use it primarily for movies and so sound detail is important and the Q40 definetly delivers on that aspect. The build is sturdy (Not a fan of flimsily made headphones... ahem Grados, Senns, Denons) and its not too heavy. My ears started to get warm after about 1 hour but that's expected with any closed style headphones. Isolation is excellent and sound leak is minimal... although certainly no IEM.

The kicker for me was the price of course. at around 100 bucks incl shipping. I don't know any comparable headphone out there at that price range.

(More customer reviews)I got these at the Starving Musician in Berkeley, and for a little less than they're selling them here. I'd have been happy even if they were a little more. I'll always try to buy from local businesses first.
Anyway, I think they're great. They weigh 7.9 ounces...not enough to push your skull down onto your neck, as the other reviewer implies. Do some yoga buddy. They're really sturdy, and I find the strapping system very comfortable. I also like the fact that they come with a couple cords (a nice long straight one and a coiled one)that are both replaceable. There are also two options for the ear pads, leather or microfiber. And they sound GREAT! Yeah.

Audio Technica Pro Studio Monitor Headphones Review

(More customer reviews)My low-end studio equipment doesn't qualify me to give much of an opinion on such matters, but the ATH-M50s are easily the best closed cans I've ever used.

My trusty Senn 280s have served me well for several years, and I prefer them to the Sony 7506s and ATH-M40s that I've also auditioned in my studio. After reading a series of rave reviews (in Tape Op, Recording, etc.), I ordered the M50s just for comparison's sake.

I was fairly sure I'd send them back after a listen. I never did. Simply put, the M50s are the first closed cans that I feel I can trust for rough mixing, and surprisingly, the first closed cans that make me want to listen just for enjoyment. They clearly live up the street from my old Senns, which I now use solely for tracking.

PROs
* detailed yet coherent sound that mirrors higher-end monitor speakers
* particularly impressive bass response (deep, tight) and soundstage (great imaging)
* very comfy fit, with special fake leather that seems durable and somewhat breathable

CONs
* rather short coiled cord, requiring an extension for some applications
* slightly looser fit than the Senn 280s (good or bad, depending on head size)

Speakers of any type are hard to recommend since tastes, physiology, and other equipment vary so much, but you may want to audition these if you need a pair for higher-end listening tasks. They work beautifully for me, and the price seems fair (paid $139 new, shipping included). Then again, with my mostly bargain-basement studio gear, what do I know? Make sure you have a good return policy, just in case.
