Clarion VZ409 7-Inch Single-DIN Multimedia Station Review

This headunit is great. Everything runs and sounds great. There are only two problems I have with it: I installed it myself, and I had an extremely hard time connecting the brake cord to my trucks parking brake signal cord, and as of now, I have yet to get it connected. The other problem is the iPod interface. It loads very quickly, but the scrolling is not very intuitive and it takes a very long time to scroll through the song/artist/album lists. Other than that, though, this is an extremely easy to use unit that is well worth the cost.

This is one fantastic car stereo, but it has two flaws, IMHO...
First, the volume knob is quite small and doesn't protrude out very far, making it difficult to turn the volume up or down while driving, especially on bumpy roads.I think Clarion should have done two things here. One, make the volume knob pop out farther with a push and then push back into place.Second make the volume control adjustable on-screen, either by dragging and dropping the volume bar or by pushing the icons for more volume or less volume.Either or both of these changes would greatly improve the controls.

Secondly, for some reason if the stereo isn't on the Ipod input when you turn the car off, then it will not recognize that there is an Ipod attached when you turn the car on until you remove and re-attach the Ipod, which is not a huge deal, unless you keep the Ipod in your locked glove-box then it is a pain in the ......

For these two reasons I give it four stars, but other than that it is AWESOME!!!And, as always, Amazon is impeccably priced and their service is top-notch!!!

Also, one last note...I wanted to redo my interior with more brushed aluminum and this stereo looks killer in the dash.I love the brushed aluminum look!

Clarion VX409 6.5 inch Double-DIN Multimedia Station with Touch-Panel Control Station
Average Reviews:

I installed this unit in my 2009 Subaru WRX. I removed it and returned it after 3 days.

The good:

-It has a good amount of power. I ran this to my stock speakers and they sounded much, much better than they did with the factory receiver.
-Good build quality. The physical unit feels well made. Mechanical flip face works smoothly, buttons and volume dial feel solid.
-It's cheap.

The bad:

-iPod integration is terrible. There is no way to easily scroll through artists/albums etc. You have to click an arrow to flip through each individual entry. This is OK if you have a couple albums on a nano, but not OK if you plan to connect an iPod with a large library. Finding an artist beginning with 'N' took close to 100 clicks with my full 120GB iPod classic. And if you want to go from Nelly to Nirvana, you have to start all over from 'A' again.
-Poor screen resolution. Font edges are jagged.
-No dimmer. It has a dimmer connection wire, but it did not work on my unit. The screen was at full brightness at all times, and the manual dimmer control did not work either. At night it was like having a spotlight in my dash.
-Restarts between sources. Every time you change sources, the entire unit restarts. Screen shuts off then on and everything. It doesn't take too long, 3-4 seconds maybe, but it is rather odd and obnoxious. I took the whole thing out to check for a loose connection when it first happened. Called Clarion about it and they said it is normal operation.
-Navigation. The specs list this unit as being compatible with an optional navigation unit. However, the only input for the navigation unit is a component video connection. So if you were to connect navigation, the VX409 would only serve as a monitor, and you would not have touch screen control of anything.

Overall, the actual physical unit could be quite nice. However the software feels like going back to using Windows 95.

I ordered this item from Amazon. Once I had it professionally installed I was informed that it was a faulty radio because my Drivers side tweeter wouldn't work with it but would with other tested radios. I informed Amazon and they overnighted another radio to me and once it was installed I was very impressed. Looks great in a car with a double din. Plays DVD flawlessly! Touch screen is very responsive and many options etc!! My speakers are much louder and more clear now with this unit. Would recommend buying from Amazon before going to your audio shop where they would charge you much more!

My wife gave me the green light to splurge on a much more expensive amp I'd been researching, but after coming across a write up from 6 Moons about Glow's Amp, I decided to go out on a limb and buy the much cheaper "Amp One". I couldn't be happier with the purchase. Crisp, clean and clear sound is what this amp is all about. Unbelievable, but it really does rival amps that cost 2-3 times more.

I bought the Shure SE310MPA - Black Sound Isolating Stereo Headset a few months ago and have been quite pleased with the sound quality and comfort of the earbuds.

However, as far as the headset is concerned, they are virtually useless. On the iPhone with the earbuds / microphone that comes with the iPhone, I get great sidetone when talking. They don't fit my ear very well which is why I bought a replacement. But the Shure microphone does not give any sidetone through the earbuds. Why this may be hard to do I don't understand and after spending a considerable amount of time with their support I still did not get a very good answer.

I am a pilot and am used to hearing myself speaking through the headset on every transmission and the inability to do that means this headset is useless for me in talking on the iPhone.Still works good for listening to music, podcasts, audible books, etc.

Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 Pro Earphones Gun Metal Blue Review

These are amazing earphones or In-Ear Monitors (IEM's) as they are also known.I have owned and listened to many many types of headphones and earphones.

Out of the top end IEM's I've listened to or owned (comparing to Etymotic ER-4S, Shure E500, etc.) The Triple.fi 10 Pro earns the top spot and is most used in my portable stable of headphones/earphones.

Having incredible detail, a very large and wide soundstage, the Triple.fi's deliver all of these sonic goodness without losing one part that is often lacking or done so poorly with headphones in general.

Bass.

The Triple.fi's have a powerful bass output, but without sounding overly muddy and boomy. The treble is also very extended, and offer all the "sparkle" and "sizzle" with incredible nuance and detail. Some may find the treble too "bright" and harsh with lesser sources, but I listen to FLAC files.

Comfort can be an issue to some, but it is always a personal choice.I wear glasses and like the memory wire part near the earpiece that can be molded to go over the ear without getting in the way. Also, the silicone rubber earpieces are very comfortable and maintain an excellent seal with my ears.

If you are looking for top of the line, the Triple.fi 10 Pro's should be at the top of your shopping list.

Amazing soundstage wide separation and crisp, crystal clear sound reproduction. Bass is above average mids and highs are wonderful. But I am listening to a 1st generation iPod (one of the better versions of the iPod) But the eq is not very adjustable. Where this in ear monitor excels is in comfort. You can wear them for hours and forget they are even there. You can lay on a pillow and they do not push into the ear and hurt. They WILL NOT fall out under any circumstance as they fit snugly in ear and then the cord wraps over the ear. You cannot feel the cord after the first 30 seconds or so.

I have heard things in my music that I have never heard before even with music have listened to for 20 years on LP, Cassette and CD. I actually heard a favorite artist lick his lips before he began singing one of his songs!
Well worth the money.

This is my second set of Hi end earphones and wish I bought these first. I cannot imagine a better pair could actually exist if you add the comfort factor with the fidelity factor.

In-ear headphones, dual-balanced armature drivers, 3.5 mm connector, S/M/L earpieces Review

In-ear headphones, dual-balanced armature drivers, 3.5 mm connector, S/M/L earpieces
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Believe it or not, for what these cost they are an incredible value for money. I've had my hands on dozens of high-priced in-ear earphones and have kept these over each one they have come up against. First off there is the buildquality, which is absolutely flawless. The hard plastic shells feature titanium faceplates and integrated strain reliefs which protect the thick and soft internally-braided cables. I have put my set through many months of gym use and a year or so of regular everyday use before that and there isn't a mark on them. To make them more exercise-friendly, the cables carry the least cable contact noise (microphonics) of any in-ear that I've tried. They also fit very snugly into my ears, though I will admit that stock tips are rubbish and recommend Sony Hybrid earcushions (EP-EX10A) as a replacement.

In terms of sound quality, these are definitely not for bassheads. Only lovers of clean and analytical sound need apply. Their response curve is astonishingly flat all the way down to 20Hz, with tight and accurate bass that reveals nuances you may not have previously heard at the expense of a tiny bit of dynamic range. At the top end they have sparkly, accented treble which borders on being bright. Clarity, detail, and instrumental separation are all on par with, if not better than, the popular $300+ in-ears out there.

For the people who are content with $20 earphones that act as nothing more than bass cannons, these are not recommended. For the music lover in search of the most detailed sound money can buy, these warrant being right near the top of the list as a total package.

I primarily use earphones with my iPod, particularly when traveling by air, which I do a lot.The Klipsch Images replaced an older set of Shure E3c in-ear phones that I had been using for about three years. The Klipsch phones are very light, and I found that their earpieces fit me better and were more comfortable to wear than the Shures. They sealed out noise very well. Most importantly, however, the sound of the Klipsch phones is superb, and noticeably better than the Shure phones, any iPod earbuds and even my full-size Grado SR125s.Bass response is astonishingly good. These are expensive, but if you want something small, light and of very high quality, these phones are a great choice.

Grado GR8 In-Ear Headphones Review

Grado GR8 In-Ear Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sound of the Grado earphones is very good.It is balanced. It is not weak either in the upper end or in the bass. The sound production seems very accurate, but also really fun. These earphones have that Grado sound which is very lively.I have used them both for classical music and jazz. They are surprisingly good in classical music. They are very clean sounding.I listened to them on an Ipod with a Leckerton headphone amplifier which is under $200.00.It comes with three different sizes of ear gels, but none was quite big enough for me to achieve a good seal which is necessary for proper bass response.I used a T 400 Comfort Foam Tip which did the trick for me.I noticed that Westone, Shure and Etymotic all include foam earpieces to ensure that their earphones achieve a good seal.If a listener (particularly a newbie to high end earphones) first tries earphones and does not get a good fit, they feel cheated or at least very disappointed.Hopefully, Grado will see fit to include some alternative foam tips in their packaging for future models.

The best thing about these earphones is that they have a very good sound stage.I listen primarily to jazz and classical music. Both are essentially "acoustic" in nature. You can actually detect "sound stage" and placement of instruments with these earphones which I believe is not very common in earphones.

The individual earphones ae very compact which is very convenient. There are three negatives to these earphones. The packaging is very sparce. It comes with the standard three ear gels which are always too small for me to get a good seal.Secondly, the earphones do not come with a little carrying case. This is a mistake. They could have a small pouch like comes with the Etymotics if they wanted to save money. After all, they are portable for people on the move. The investment is too dear to not want to take care of them. The good news is that there are a few sources for inexpensive zippered cases. If Grado included a carrying case, it would complete the picture for me.Don't be discouraged though. You can buy a very cheap carrying case.It does improve the comfort and sound experience.Lastly, the wiring seems to get tangled rather easily.I am using an old Shure case with a spool in the middle to wrap the cables around to ensure that they do not tangle.Even though the wiring can easily tangle, the wires are not particularly "microphonic" in that they do not seem to actually magnify the sound of the wires rubbing against anything while you move. The Klipsch Image is a wonderful tiny earphone where the wires are extremely microphonic which can be irritating.

All in all, these earphones really sound fun. That Grado sound is like a terrific desert.

Grado RS1i Reference Series Headphones Review

Grado RS1i Reference Series Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am extremely happy that Amazon.com started stocking Grado products.

To audiophiles, Grado is a very big name. Grado makes some of the world's best consumer turntable catridges, and makes some of the most notoriously fun, musical headphones out there.

The Grado RS-1 headphones are the second-most expensive Grado headphones on the market now. The PS-1 is a limited-edition headphone that is very seldom-made (but it is in production currently) that contains some of the best detail, fluidity, warmth, and excitement than any other headphone. However, the RS-1s are very close to the specifications of this headphone.

The Grado Reference Series 1 is, in my opinion, the true audiophile way to ENJOY your music. Others may say that they do not like the musicality, because it has a very colored sound. Audiophiles normally know that this is not good because it doesn't "faithfully" reproduce the information on your record/CD properly. However, I don't always want to sit there and listen to the minor details of my music. Sometimes I just want to rock out and enjoy myself as much as possible, which is where the Grado RS1 headphones take the responsibility of fulfilling this for me.

The RS1 headphones at first are going to look very cheap to those who are not familiar with them. The headband is leather, but it is thin. The earcups do not surround the ear at all, they just touch them. This is a very open headphone, so outside noise will come in, and your sound will leak.

But these are all very obvious and welcome shortcomings. This leads to a very good performing headphone. While they may not be as comfortable as the Senns, they are definitely faster, more enjoyable, and contain a much more fluid sound than the Sennheiser HD650s. If you want to listen to Rock on these headphones, particularly bands from the seventies and eighties, these are the best option you will have.

Another great thing about the headphones is that they are really easy to drive without the presence of a headphone amplifier. I have experienced, however, that with my Perreaux SXH-1 amp, it really improves the sound quality. Things that the Grado sound lacks are dynamic range and midrange neutrality, but the amp was able to tone down the midrange and bass was much more dynamic than before.

If you wanna have some of the best sound quality on the planet from a name you can trust, then you will want to go with a Grado headphone. Everything from Classical to Metal sounds amazing on these headphones. They are extremely versatile, are durable even though they look like they were from WW2, and, best of all, they are some of the best sounding headophones you can buy. Male vocals, drums, wailing guitars, you name it - Grado will reproduce it faithfully.

Some albums I recommend on the Grado RS1:
Pink Floyd - The Wall
The Doors - Morison Hotel
Todd Rundgren - Something Anything
Neil Young - After the Goldrush
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick

Happy listening!

I just received my P5's at lunch and my first impressions are that these are a great looking set of headphones. The packaging was very impressive and protected the headphones during shipping. I was happily surprised to find that they came with a leather lined bag for storage. The headphones are also very comfortable and really do seal very well despite the small size of the cups. The leather pads are very comfortable and the headband easily adjusted to accommodate (large) my head. The metal finish is outstanding and does not disappoint. Sound so far is amazing and very detailed without break-in time. As with other B&W speakers these will not hide any imperfections in music or add anything to your music, they simply reveal what is there. I only expect the sound to open up with break-in. Package also includes 1/4" plug adapter and spare cable without the in-line mic. You also get 3 months of membership to B&W's Society of Sound when you register your headphones.

Many manufacturers like to accentuate bass and high frequencies to help make audio sound better. In some cases, it works. For those who prefer all the natural music properties preserved in the original form, there's the Bowers & Wilkins P5 Mobile HiFi Stereo Headphones.

Deep" bass. "Enhanced" treble. Sounds good on the pack, but the problem with the gimmicky effects that so often come with other headphones is that they quickly become tiring with extended listening. With P5, you get a far more natural sound, and longer-lasting listening enjoyment.

Behind P5's natural sound is some of the most advanced technology ever to be put into a set of headphones. Specially developed ultra-linear neodymium magnets and highly optimised Mylar diaphragms keep music sound rich, pure and incredibly detailed, with no need for artificial adjustments.

Grado Prestige Series SR325is Headphones Review

Grado Prestige Series SR325is Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Grado SR325 has now been replaced by the 325i -- recognizable by its goldilsh-silver aluminim styling. More modern-looking than the other phones in the Presige line, it's a solidly built piece of gear that's made to last for a long time.

After breaking them in, the distinctive Grado sound asserts intself. Prominent, flexible bass predominates somewhat over the powerful mid-highs, making this an outstanding rock'n'roll headphone. But classical music fares well, too; you'll notice detail while enjoying the power of the recording. The 325i easily powers a portable CD player, and sounds wonderful wtih an iPod (especially if you play around with the iTunes presets).

It's only after about five or so days of break-in that the sound truly starts to coalesce. (All top-quality headphones benefit from break-in, which means leaving the headphones connected to a medium-volume audio source; some leave them connected all day and night for weeks. This allows the headphone's speaker diaphragms to loosen and play more easily.) These phones have a prominent low, detailed middles (with a slight hump), and highs that sometimes push a little too hard.

The earpads can make a big difference. The phones come with "bowl" pads, thick foam rubber cushions that fit just on the ear. These allow the clearest audio presentation, though some wear them slightly above the ear and to the back for the most accurate sound. The "flat" pads bring the speaker drivers much closer to the ear, accenting the bass and smoothing out the 325i's highs. Both styles have their fans, but Grado ships the phones with the pads (bowls) they think work best. Your ears should be the judge.

The 325i's color the sound to achieve a result that works best with harder pop music and reggae, while fans of classical and jazz might find the lighter Senn style more to their liking. But the 325s have a lot of versatility, and are also likely to please people who have eclectic tastes.

Shure SE530 Sound Isolating Earphones Review

Shure SE530 Sound Isolating Earphones

***** Initial review - September, 2007 *****

My first exposure to these headphones was through a friend at the office who purchased a set of Shure E500s about a year ago (the E500s are pretty much identical to the SE530s).When he told me (and the rest of us) how much he paid for them ($500+ for the E500PTHs) we collectively thought he was nuts and proceeded to ridicule the decision.

That was before we heard them.

I first heard the E500s when that same friend from the office was going to send his set back to Shure under warranty due to the wires cracking with part of the copper conductors exposed near the ear area.He figured he was getting a new set from Shure, so he may as well let us hear them.Well, I thought I was good with my Sennheiser CX300s.I was wrong.Really, really wrong.I put the SE500s through their paces with my Rio Karma loaded with tunes I personally ripped using CDEX and Lame at a high bitrate.I used material ripped from MFSL Ultradiscs, DCC and Sony Superbitmap discs as well as other good, dynamic recordings and remasters.I never knew IEMs could sound this good! The E500s were audio bliss! There were excellent highs, mids and lows, all crystal clear and accurate without distortion. One of the most amazing things about them was the soundstage. With good source material, I could hear different instruments as if they each had a direct line into my brain. You could easily hear the difference between good recordings and masterings and ones that are not so great.I was sold on the spot.To verify my new opinion, I had certain other guys at the office (who are also appreciative of quality audio) listen to them, and they were just as amazed. We all apologized. He let me borrow them overnight. That evening I listened to them on the train home and then literally went crazy listening to everything I could, including some 24-bit DVD audio on my home system.I listened to them all night.Broken wires or not, I did not want to return them the next day.

So in a nutshell, I loved them, but I could not justify spending the money on the SE530s ($430 at the time)...Here I thought my Sennheiser CX300s were good... errr.. but not SE530 good. Not even close. They were just not in the same league.

So I watched and waited here at Amazon and in about two weeks the price dropped $40 to $390.Alright, I had enough! That was my cue to buy!

That was a few weeks ago and I have no regrets.

The sound isolation is really good, easily blocking out most outside sound when using the supplied foams. Also, the foams are comfortable (for me) and I can leave them in for hours without fatigue. The result is that you tend to listen to the music at a slightly lower volume since the outside noise is so well blocked. But if you do want to crank it, the SE530s can handle it.I use them every day during my commutes on the train. They were definitely worth the money.

My only criticism (other than the price) is with the wires. The wires are too thick, heavy and stiff in my opinion.I wish they were more like the thin, light, extremely flexible silicon type wires like the ones on the Sennheiser CX300s.I don't know what Shure was thinking using these. As I said earlier in the review, my friend's E500's stiff wires were damaged after a year and I can see that happening with these too.Good thing the the SE530s have a two year warranty.I substituted the long extension that came with them with a highly flexible extension that came with a pair of Sonys... so much lighter and better.

Overall the wire situation is a small negative compared to a very big positive of the amazing sound reproduction.

One of the other reviewers here said it, don't listen to these headphones if you don't plan on buying them.If you love audio, once you listen through these SE530s, you cannot ignore them.

***** UPDATE: 10/9/2007 *****

I'm still amazed at just how good these sound.I've been using them every day during my daily rail commute to and from NYC from the suburbs. The isolation level they provide is amazing!Using the supplied foam ear pads, I can honestly say that it almost doesn't matter if the lady next to me starts yapping on her cell phone or if a group of tourists is having a loud conversation - I won't hear 'em.With these on, you are in your own world. You will notice some outside sound between songs or during very quiet passages, but for the most part, if you are using the foams and they are inserted correctly, you will be very well isolated.Highly recommended for commuters. The wires still suck though.

***** UPDATE: 7/30/2008 *****

Its been ten months since I purchased these SE530s and every day I use them, I'm glad I did.I use them on an almost daily basis during my rail commutes to and from the office and the sound quality has been nothing less than outstanding for both music and movies. The fact that you get all this clarity and resolution along with full bass AND that almost all outside noise is blocked makes them truly great.I cannot imagine better sounding headphones for any price.I have to laugh when I see people wearing bulky, full-sized headphones on the train - I would not want to to do that.

So, I've had no regrets regarding the investment... that is, until today.Today I noticed what I knew was inevitable... one of the wires has developed a crack in the insulation near the black molded rubber strain relief and has exposed the copper conductor beneath.Upon further inspection, the other wire is showing signs of imminent cracking in the same area.I have been so very careful as to only pull them out of my ears via the back of the drivers near the strain relief and frankly, I cannot imagine how I could have treated them any better and not had this happen.I know that I predicted that this *exact* thing would happen in my initial review (see above and in the comments section) but it sucks now that it actually did.I still cannot understand how Shure could be using these stiff, inflexible, poorly performing wires on an otherwise fine set of super-premium earbuds. Now I have to return them under warranty for replacement.I called Shure and they want me to ship the 530s back to them, insured, with my proof of purchase from an authorized dealer (which Amazon is) along with their RMA form and I should see a replacement in *TWO WEEKS,* maybe more.TWO WEEKS?For $400+ headphones I expect better service than this. They will not cross-ship me a new pair either as they are "not set up" to do that.Shipping them back will likely cost me at least $20 with the insurance.

The worst part of this is that I fully expect that I'm going to receive a brand new pair with the same issue waiting to happen again over the course of normal use.I know this because my friend from the office, who originally introduced me to the Shures, is now on his... get this... *FIFTH PAIR* of SE500/530s - as four sets have developed the same exact wire cracking issue within a period of only two years.I did some poking around on the internet and there are even other reviews here on Amazon that detail the *exact* same issue.WTF is Shure thinking?I can walk down the street to any electronics store and buy a $30 set of buds with wire that will not have this issue... how is it that a $400+ super-primo set does? You can't tell me that other people aren't returning them... FIX THE ISSUE WITH THE WIRES, SHURE!!!

I'll update this review again when I receive my replacement pair.

***** UPDATE: 4/21/2009 *****

I swapped out for a new pair of SE530s in December, 2008 - I'm not going into the mechanics of that, but I didn't go through Shure. The wire on this pair is definitely different than the wire on my first pair.It is a bit more flexible and a tad thinner.I know with the first pair, I predicted immediately that the wires would fail in the exact manner in which they eventually did fail. With this wire, it's more difficult to predict the longevity. It certainly feels a bit better, but I'm apprehensive to call the issue fixed.I've had this pair for about five months now and there are no signs of the cracking issue yet.The sound quality is still phenomenal and based on that alone, I think you will not be disappointed. As a side note, my coworker sent yet another pair back as the black rubber strain relief separated from the body on his left speaker. You cannot reattach it.I can see how that could happen, but so far I have no similar issue.

***** UPDATE: 9/28/2009 *****

In July I purchased a new 32gb Cowon S9 to replace my aging Rio Karma. The audio output quality of the S9 is truly excellent and the Shure SE530s together with the S9 sound amazing! But now the rubber strain relief on my left bud is separating, just like it did on my co-worker's pair back in April. This doesn't affect the sound at all, but it looks bad and since the wire strain relief is no longer functioning, the wire is SHURE to suffer. This is disappointing as I've only had this pair (my 2nd) for nine months. This kind of thing just shouldn't happen to super-premium, pricey IEMs.Since I've been very careful with them and research shows that these issues are common with the 530s, I know it's not due to mishandling or abuse. My two years of experience with them has shown that the 530s are super delicate and if you use them regularly, no matter how hard...Read more›
